Looking for a serene escape near Mumbai? Saral Beach in Alibaug, Raigad district, Maharashtra, offers a tranquil getaway with pristine shores and breathtaking views. But recently, this beautiful beach has become a hotspot for something even more special: rare bird sightings!
Saral Beach is known for its clean sands, calm waters, and relaxed atmosphere. It's a perfect destination for a weekend trip, offering opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and simply unwinding amidst nature. But now, it's attracting a new kind of visitor: birdwatchers.
Recently, renowned ornithologist Vaibhav Patil, along with fellow bird enthusiasts from the Baharai Foundation, made an exciting discovery at Saral Beach: the elusive Red Knot! This marked only the third time this stunning bird has been spotted in Maharashtra and the first time ever in the Raigad district.
The Red Knot is a migratory bird that breeds in the Arctic Tundra regions of Canada, Europe, and Russia. During winter, it travels thousands of miles to warmer climates. Spotting it in India is a rare and thrilling experience for any bird enthusiast. Its vibrant red plumage, reminiscent of red watercolor paint, makes it a truly striking bird.
This exciting sighting puts Saral Beach and the Raigad district firmly on the map for birdwatchers. The Baharai Foundation has also recently recorded sightings of other interesting species like the Pied Wheatear, Common Quail (from Maharashtra), and the Red Crested Pochard (from Raigad), further cementing the area's importance for avian diversity.
